F: Well, the lovely witch, Agnes Moorehead.

A: It's marvelous to be called a lovely witch.

F: But you are!

A: Seldom have I been called lovely though, in pictures.

F: Tell me, do you really fancy yourself as a witch?

A: No - and I hope no one else does just because I'm playing one. But that reminds me of the Hollywood Bowl incident. We had done the show ("Bewitched") there and afterwards there were the usual people who want autographs and make you feel very attractive and elated. Among them was a little group of children and one of them came over and said to me "Miss Moorehead, make us disappear." And then I said "Well, you follow along and I'll make you disappear later." But she looked at me very strangely and said "No Ma'am!" It was very sweet.

F: Is it nice to be a smash?

A: It's really kind of frightening, you know. It is wonderful and one is very grateful to be in a show that people enjoy, but the thing that frightens me is the tremendous amount of responsibility. To keep up the quality week after week after week, you have to keep working hard at it.

F: Isn't TV a lark for you?

A: No, I wouldn't say that it's a lark, although the acting is very enjoyable. I do think that it's very hard work and that you have to be very careful with your creative sense. It is the only sacred thing an actor has and it must be protected and nurtured a great deal. There's very little time to nurture it. Rest days really do have to be rest days to give you a chance to refuel.

F: What do you think makes this show the success it is?

A: Humor and warmth. I don't think there's an ugly intent in it. Every successful show must have warmth. Even if you're playing tragedy, you must play it with warmth. There's also a magic that we can't analyze - why do people get involved, and believe in a character on a stage? You can't analyze it, but it's magic that an actor must have.

F: People are bound to think of you as a witch from now on.

A: I hope they won't do that forever because I enjoy doing all kinds of other things.

F: You have bewitched audiences for many years already, you know. I hope you continue to do so for a long, long time.

See Agnes in "Bewitched" on ABC-TV, every Thursday at 9:00 P.M. EST.
